His voice naturally has a lot of distortion when he's doing vocals but that said I use lots of compression, a bit of eq to cut mud, saturation/distortion (probably the effect you're after), and a limiter.
A good free vst plugin for saturation is Ruby Tube, it distorts more of the midrange and doesn't sound too harsh or fizzy. Its fun to play around with the free tubescreamer 808 plugins and amp simulators for more extreme effects. Cheers +1
