I've noticed that if the bass sounds good, it sounds bad in the song.

I don't understand much about mixing, but I used to focus only on the 50hz-450hz range. Now I've noticed that the cool stuff with bass can be found at about 700hz, 1100hz, 1500hz, 3000hz and 5000hz. Those bigger numbers already go on top of other instruments, so you're right that something cool and weird happens when the ugly sounds are mixed.
Well, by trying new ways to mix, I learn new things all the time.
