The cycle began
when the jars arrived,
strands of tiny caterpillars
clamoring to survive,

Rambling to and fro,
up and down
climbing the glass walls,
hitting the glass ceiling
as all the voracious eaters
fought for their fate,

And there they hung,
anxious for the next chapter.

Hairy candy canes
for just a brief moment
until they were cloaked in green,
their new emerald armor
a transformative sheen

Then growing darker, darker,
by the day
emulating rotten leaves
as they continued,
their ugly way

Looking like nature's mistake
their hard shells
enclosed within the mesh,
making the best
and a mess of
their cramped quarters,

Until they cleared
their cases,
breaking free
finally ready to be
out of their brown coffins,
alive and brand new

Wings, brighter than rainbows,
a full 360°
from their humble beginnings,
ready for their final release
