Wade I'm not a harmonica player, yet it seems that like most other instruments having a good sense of rhythm, enthusiasm and a feel for the music is more important than technical mastery. This site is filled with non-pro musicians who exhibit that drive and excitement. By contrast the media is filled with horribly over-engineered commercial crap that's technically perfect, but vacuous with little or nothing said. +0

MikeyJ Couldn’t agree with you more Wade.Of course when you can combine enthusiasm and feel with technical mastery also……:o +1

Wade Hopefully everyone strives to be better, yet it's been my observation that if the goal is singularly technical mastery or a great deal of knowledge, it doesn't necessarily translate to creativity or good communication. A sad fact: I don't know of a single great musician, composer or artist who has a PhD. There are thousands of well trained Jazz musicians who are technically amazing, yet have nothing to say other than I'm copying some other great player from 60 + years ago. +1

MikeyJ Two great musicians with PhD’s,Brian May lead guitarist with Queen , in astrophysics and Bill Bruford awesome jazz drummer, formerly with Yes, in music, but I get your point, you can teach someone to read music but you can’t teach someone to feel music +1

Wade
Wade Almost good examples: Brian May has a 2007 PhD in astrophysics. That of course has nothing to do with music. Bill Bradford retired from music in 2009 and got his PhD in 2016.

You got the point anyway. A high degree of education and/or technical proficiency almost always seems to mean that the artist has lost sight of creativity.

It's hard for me to believe that all of those young talents that got scholarships and went though "the system" weren't capable of being creative. Unfortunately "the system" seems to push in a direction that's the antithesis of creativity.

It's like you are what you eat. We are/become what we practice. Years of technical workouts, and in the case of Jazz, developing finger memory patterns, means that fitting within the form takes precedent over having something to say as an individual musician. They may be good session musicians, but the spark is lost.
