IMHO having a melodic sense is irreplaceable. All the other technical aspects can be worked on. Too many players can only diddle with the chords/changes and can't otherwise hear a thing to play. IMHO having something to say always beats even the best technical players. The technical types are always playing to impress...who cares? When you play to enhance, tell stories and entertain, people listen.
